Wewelkandura Achieves Rainforest Alliance Recertification for 2025

Our estate has successfully passed the annual Rainforest Alliance surveillance audit, reaffirming our commitment to sustainable farming and worker welfare.

January 10, 2025

A Milestone for Sustainable Tea Farming

We are proud to announce that Wewelkandura Tea Estate has successfully completed its annual Rainforest Alliance surveillance audit and has been recertified for 2025. This certification confirms our ongoing adherence to the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard, one of the most rigorous frameworks in the global food and agriculture industry.

What the Audit Covers

The Rainforest Alliance audit evaluates more than 100 criteria across three pillars: environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic viability. Auditors from an accredited certification body spent three days on the estate reviewing our practices firsthand.

Key areas assessed included:

  • Biodiversity conservation — maintenance of native forest buffers and riparian vegetation
  • Water management — closed-loop processing water systems and stream buffer compliance
  • Worker rights and welfare — wages, housing conditions, access to healthcare, and grievance mechanisms
  • Agrochemical management — restricted substance controls and integrated pest management records
  • Farm management systems — traceability, record-keeping, and continuous improvement plans

What This Means for Our Buyers

Products carrying the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal give buyers and consumers confidence that the tea in their cup was grown in a way that respects people and planet. For our international export partners, recertification ensures continued access to sustainability-conscious retail channels and premium positioning in key markets.

Looking Ahead

This recertification is a step on our journey towards full carbon neutrality by 2027. We thank our entire estate team — particularly our Sustainability Coordinator and field supervisors — for their dedication to maintaining these high standards day in and day out.
