Question 1

Who is Wewelkandura Tea Factory?

Accepted Answer

New Wewelkandura Tea Factory (Pvt) Ltd is a proud member of the Hansagiri Group, crafting premium-quality Ceylon tea since 1998. With over 25 years of expertise, we combine time-honoured traditional methods with modern technology to produce authentic, 100% pure Ceylon tea with no additives or artificial ingredients.

Question 2

Where are your factories located?

Accepted Answer

We operate two state-of-the-art facilities in Sri Lanka's prime tea-growing regions. Our primary facility, Wewelkandura Tea Factory, is located in Uda Pebotuwa, Ratnapura District, near the UNESCO World Heritage Sinharaja Rainforest — ideal for low-grown teas with a rich, full-bodied character. Our highland facility, Kothmale Tea Factory, is nestled in the misty Kothmale highlands at over 1,000 metres elevation, producing bright, delicately aromatic high-grown Ceylon tea.

Question 3

What is the Hansagiri Group?

Accepted Answer

Hansagiri Group is the parent company of New Wewelkandura Tea Factory (Pvt) Ltd. The group's head office is located at No 586, Galle Road, Beruwala, Sri Lanka. You can reach the group directly at tea@hansagiri.lk.

Question 4

How long has Wewelkandura been producing tea?

Accepted Answer

Wewelkandura Tea Factory has been crafting premium Ceylon tea since 1998 — over 25 years of uncompromising quality. Our journey builds on the broader legacy of Ceylon tea, which dates back to 1867 when James Taylor first introduced commercial tea cultivation to Sri Lanka.

Question 5

What makes Wewelkandura teas different from other Ceylon teas?

Accepted Answer

Every stage of our production — from the careful weighing of fresh green leaves to the final dispatch — is managed with advanced technology and strict quality control. Our teas are 100% pure, produced exclusively from fresh green leaves with absolutely no additives or artificial ingredients. We hold ISO 22000:2018, HACCP, and GMP certifications, and our two distinct factory locations (low-grown Kalawana and high-grown Kothmale) allow us to offer a uniquely broad range of authentic Ceylon tea grades.

Question 6

What retail tea products do you offer?

Accepted Answer

Our retail range currently includes two signature products. Kahata Tea is our bold, strong tea sourced from low-grown estates in the Ruhuna region — available in 100g, 200g, 400g, and 1 kg packs. We also offer premium Tea Bags (25, 50, and 100 bags per box), containing the same high-quality dust-grade tea for a consistently strong, brisk cup. Both are vacuum-packed to preserve peak freshness.

Question 7

What bulk and export tea grades do you produce?

Accepted Answer

We produce over 13 internationally recognised Ceylon tea grades: Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP), Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings (BOPF), BOP 1, Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe (FBOP), FBOPF, FBOPF Extra Special, Pekoe, Pekoe 1, Orange Pekoe (OP), OP1, OPA, Dust 1, and Dust. These span the full spectrum from delicate whole-leaf grades to strong fannings and dust grades used in tea bags and blends.

Question 8

What is the difference between whole-leaf, broken, and fannings grades?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon tea grades are classified by leaf size and particle consistency. Whole-leaf grades (OP, OP1, OPA, Pekoe) use the largest leaf particles, producing a lighter, more delicate cup with subtle flavour. Broken grades (BOP, BOP 1, FBOP, FBOPF, FBOPF EX. SP.) use smaller broken particles that brew faster and deliver a stronger, fuller-bodied cup — the most popular everyday grades. Fannings and Dust grades (BOPF, Dust 1, Dust) are the finest particles, yielding a very dark, thick, intense cup and are ideal for tea bags and quick-brew blends.

Question 9

What is FBOPF Extra Special and why is it sought after?

Accepted Answer

FBOPF Extra Special (FBOPF EX. SP.) is a premium export grade that contains a high percentage of golden tips — the tender young buds of the tea plant. It produces a bright golden-red liquor with a fruity aroma and mellow, refined taste. It is particularly prized in international export markets and is seasonally sourced from the Uva region of Sri Lanka.

Question 10

What regions do your teas come from?

Accepted Answer

Our teas are sourced from multiple Sri Lankan growing regions depending on the grade. Low-grown teas (below 600m) come from the Ruhuna and Kalawana areas and are known for a bold, full-bodied character. Mid-country and high-grown teas come from Uva, Dimbula, and the Kothmale highlands (above 1,000m), prized for their bright golden liquor, delicate aroma, and brisk flavour.

Question 11

Are your teas pure Ceylon tea with no additives?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every tea we produce is 100% pure and authentic Ceylon black tea, made exclusively from fresh green leaves. We use absolutely no additives, artificial flavourings, or preservatives at any stage of production.

Question 12

What certifications does Wewelkandura hold?

Accepted Answer

Wewelkandura Tea Factory holds three internationally recognised certifications: ISO 22000:2018 (Food Safety Management System), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). These certifications cover every critical stage of our tea production, from incoming leaf to final dispatch.

Question 13

What does ISO 22000:2018 certification mean for your tea?

Accepted Answer

ISO 22000:2018 is an international standard for food safety management systems. It demonstrates that we have a comprehensive, audited framework for identifying and controlling food safety hazards throughout our entire production process — from green leaf intake right through to the cup. It gives our customers confidence that every batch meets rigorous global food safety requirements.

Question 14

What is HACCP and how does it apply to your factory?

Accepted Answer

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) is a science-based system that identifies, evaluates, and controls biological, chemical, and physical hazards in food production. Our HACCP certification validates that every critical control point in our tea manufacturing — from withering and rolling to drying and sorting — is continuously monitored and controlled to ensure maximum product safety.

Question 15

What does GMP certification cover?

Accepted Answer

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification confirms that our facilities operate under the highest standards of cleanliness, hygiene, documentation, and quality control. It ensures consistent production standards across every batch so our customers can trust the quality and safety of every pack of tea they receive.

Question 16

How do you ensure consistent quality across different harvests?

Accepted Answer

We use advanced technology at every stage — precise leaf weighing, controlled withering, rolling, fermentation, drying, and grading — combined with rigorous in-house quality checks. Our ISO 22000, HACCP, and GMP frameworks provide structured protocols for every process, while our experienced tea tasters evaluate liquor colour, aroma, and taste to maintain the consistent character our customers expect.

Question 17

What sustainability initiatives does Wewelkandura run?

Accepted Answer

Sustainability is central to how we operate. Our key initiatives include a 200 kW solar power installation that powers our factory operations and significantly reduces our carbon footprint, zero-waste processing where all organic by-products (tea waste, fibre) are repurposed as bio-fuel and natural fertiliser, and active community development programmes that have engaged over 16,000 community members through education, healthcare, and infrastructure support.

Question 18

How does your solar power initiative work?

Accepted Answer

Our 200 kW solar installation is integrated into our factory operations to generate clean energy on-site. By running a significant portion of our production on solar power, we reduce our dependence on the national grid and meaningfully lower our carbon emissions — a commitment we continue to expand as part of our long-term environmental goals.

Question 19

What is your waste management approach?

Accepted Answer

We follow a zero-waste production philosophy. All organic by-products from tea processing — including fibre, tea dust, and organic waste — are repurposed either as bio-fuel to power boilers, or as natural fertiliser that is returned to partner gardens. This closed-loop approach eliminates landfill waste and supports the health of the surrounding ecosystem.

Question 20

How do you support local communities?

Accepted Answer

Through our community development programmes we have actively engaged over 16,000 community members in the regions where we operate. Our support spans education initiatives, healthcare access, and infrastructure development, reflecting our belief that a responsible tea business must leave a positive impact on the people who are part of our supply chain.

Question 21

Are your teas grown near a protected ecosystem?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our Wewelkandura Tea Factory in Kalawana is located near the Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We work closely with local smallholders in the region and are deeply conscious of our responsibility to protect this pristine ecosystem through sustainable agricultural and manufacturing practices.
